Everyone wonders who Jesus was
Crazy, wise, or the whole world's cause?
Some look at his miracles, the things that He said
But I look at the response Jesus gave when He bled
He did not speak in anger, or remain a statue
But said, “Father forgive them, they know not what they do”
How could a mere man respond with such grace?
To those who had whipped Him, shoved thorns in His face?
He made Himself nothing, was cursed to a tree
So that with Him in heaven, we could all be
Praise God for the love He showed us that day
A love that washed clean a debt we could not pay
I wrote this during Easter, partially in response to watching The Passion of Christ for the first time. That movie highlights (in graphic detail) the agonising pain that Christ endured for us on the cross. And as my understanding of that pain increased, so did my appreciation for his response to that pain. What kind of man can pray for those who are whipping him? Who can mediate on behalf of someone who is driving a spike through their wrist? It was a humbling reminder of the true greatness of Jesus’ character, not just then but now also. That he loves us to the point of willingly and lovingly giving himself to those who would torture and crucify him, all so that we would be free with him. That’s ridiculous grace.
