A day of travel
Bussing, walking, hitch hiking
Has delivered me to my destination
A house
In the middle of nowhere
I drink tea by the fire
And find myself in the company of
A dancer, a fighter, a traveller, and a magician
We sing songs
And tell stories
Climb mountains
Swim in rivers
I bake bread in the evening
And find myself in the company of
A Spaniard, an Italian, an Australian, and a Scot
We laugh
And listen to music
Play cards
And enjoy a day of travel.
I really miss traveling. This poem is based on my time hitchhiking and backpacking through the Scottish Highlands, staying in hostels surrounded by dense Scottish bush and expansive, serene lakes. The title of this poem is a reference to the friends I met on my first night in a little place called Glencoe - we were drinking tea around a fireplace and every single one of the others in the room had the most bizarre and random job. There was Remi, a professional ballet dancer from Japan, Megan and Chris - professional MMA fighters from the UK, as well as Kieran and Silka, two full time content creators who travelled for a living. We all shared crazy stories, and even though I only stayed there for a few days, it was awesome to get to know them.Â
There is a certain vibe to solo travelling, especially when you stay in hostels, that is so freeing and enjoyable. Spontaneous adventures can be seized without hesitation, and the only thing I regret about travelling is not doing more of it. That being said, I am so grateful for the stability and routine that I have right now. I missed New Zealand so much when I was overseas, and despite how much I want to go back and travel some more, I am more than content to stay.
